The Reborn in latest expansion
The original Final Fantasy XIV was released in September of 2010, and was met with largely negative reviews. Because of this, then-Square Enix president Yoichi Wada announced that a new team, headed by Naoki Yoshida, would take the reins of the project and develop new content for the original game, as well as heading up the A Realm Reborn project.
Final Fantasy: A Realm Reborn takes place in the land of Eorzea, five years after the events that unfolded in its predecessor. At the conclusion of Final Fantasy XIV, the primal dragon Bahamut escapes from its prison, beginning the Seventh Umbral Era. This apocalyptic event destroyed almost the entirety of Eorzea.
Through the blessing of the Gods, the player character escapes the destruction of Eorzea by time travelling 5 years into the future. The player then finds Eorzea rebuilding the city to its former glory. Now, the player must contend with an impeding threat of invasion from the Garlean Empire.
